in review... Jane Eyre.

Good afternoon all,

I hope you're having a lovely day so far. As promised, I am going to do a short review on BBC's 2006 version of Charlotte Bronte's literary classic, Jane Eyre.

Being the old soul that I am, I've always felt naturally drawn to the past, particularly that of England. They have such a strong & long history, which we don't have here in Australia. I love the Victorian & Edwardian eras, so of course I love any adaptation or historical fiction based in that time.

I felt Jane Eyre had timeless themes, that could be relevant today. That of loneliness, finding love & skeletons in the closet (which we all have). Jane is strong & persevering, even in the ominous & haunting residence of Edward Fairfax Rochester, her employer. She sees alot, but remains true to her station as governess. Edwards cold & brooding demeaner aside, the love between him & Jane is evident from the start.

The setting of Thornfield Manor and the surrounding moors was the perfect atmosphere for the story. The rooms & halls are dark with minimal furniture, giving a feeling of emptiness & isolation to Rochester's character. The costume design is also well done, with a lack of colour, which in other films, detracts from the characters & the story. Alot of films fill the set with objects & colours pleasing the viewer, but leaving alot to be desired when it comes to the story & dialogue.

The story is definitely bittersweet, but Jane's character always lends hope to the viewers with her purity and love for Edward. I don't want to give this mini series a rating, but I would definitely say it's one that I could watch many times over.

love,
